Ghunsa Hydro Broken

Ghunsa Micro Hydro Power system is down at the moment (March 2016). The generator unit has failed and needs replacing. This means there is no power in Ghunsa (65 houses) or Foley (20 houses).

Himalaya Development Foundation Australia (HDFA) have been supporting the repairs to the hydro system (new pipework and channels following the earthquake damage of 2008 / 2012; meters, blast tank and other essentials) over the past few years. They are also supporting the generator replacement.

The cost is 490,000 NPR for the generator plus around 850,000 NPR to heli it up (it weighs 500kg). Then there’s engineer costs!  The Ghunsa community have raised 300,000 NPR towards this but are urgently seeking more cash. HDFA are supporting with a 700,000 NPR loan.

If you can help with even a small donation it would be MUCH appreciated! Please go to the HDFA page and donate 🙂

The Ghunsa hydro was gifted to the village in 1996 by USAID, WWF and KCAP as a thank you to the community for the courageous actions rescuing the passengers and crew of a crashed helicopter high up in the mountains.
